CuZn® Filters combine the best available technology at the best prices to solve serious water problems. They work by catalytic action and the electrochemical reduction/oxidation caused by dissimilar metals, or “redox” for short.
Water enters a bed – or a disk – made of the copper-zinc alloy. Within each granule of the alloy, the copper becomes the cathode; the zinc the anode. The spaces in between become electrolytic cells; the water and its contaminants act as electrolytes. As water passes through the media, zinc and copper hydroxides form in controlled amounts. These controlled hydroxide releases are carried into the filtered water to kill bacteria and provide hostile conditions for algae and fungus growth. The give and take of electrons during filtration changes contaminants into harmless components or it electroplates them to the media, thus changing or removing them.
